Hyderabad –HIV/AIDS centre Established in 2001

Andhra Pradesh is one of the high prevalence states in India and as early as 2000, the Hyderabad care and support initiative was started. This center is the first of its kind in the whole of Andhra Pradesh. It is a haven of refuge for PLHA in distress and on any given week day one may find the outpatient clinic crowded if not overflowing. PLHA come for treatment from across the state with the hope that this is the one place that will assist them in getting better.

Capacity: The centre has 35 beds and provides all services including intensive care and palliative care. The centre has a dedicated team of care professionals and networks extensively with public and private providers.

Funders: This initiative was funded by Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society for 10 beds only.

Udupi –HIV/AIDS centre Established in 2002

Established in 2002, this is yet another center that is marked as the first HIV care center in the region. Udupi also regarded as the temple town, is famous for the hotel industry and educational institutions that provided numerous employment opportunities. Due to the lack of employment opportunities in the region most people migrate to other places in search of employment and this has contributed to the spread of HIV infections as well.

Capacity: The center has 10 beds and provides all necessary care requirements for PLHA in the region. For other advanced services the center networks with other providers though there are not many private healthcare settings in the region who are favourably disposed to HIV care. The center also networks closely with the Bangalore ART clinic and also uses its diagnostic facilities for CD4 counts etc.

Funders: This initiative was funded by Karnataka State AIDS Prevention Society.
